Let me first apologize - i'm pretty sure most people come to my art site for fun, after this pic we'll get back to the FUN bondage games...promise! :)

The Sopa and Pipa Bills however, are NOT FUN.

In recent weeks, across the sphere of people and artists I watch I've seen quite a few Journals about people who have their deviations removed by DA - mainly for adult content. While I find this censorship abhorrent, it IS in the rules, and this is DA's site after all. But artists have always had the options of posting things elsewhere. HOWEVER, the Media Conglomerates and Congress actually believe that the Internet, in it's entirety - belongs to them. They want to be able to ban things from web ENTIRELY .

You may ask how this applies to you, since SOPA applies only to "pirated" works. But let's say this bill passes, and does manage to stymie Copyright Piracy. How long do you think it would be before a bill is introduced to say outlaw adult material? Once the mechanism of censorship is in place they will turn it on ANYONE who is, to use familiar word "Deviant" in their minds. If you've ever been here before - Liked, what you saw, maybe were inspired to try Bondage Art yourself, that person is YOU.

I'm not going to into details about how these Bills work - there are tremendous site who've done it far better than I ever could.

Here are some links to them:

While I fully support the protection of copy righted material. This law goes way to far. Among it far reaching grasp for power is, if someone leave a comment on a blog, and it turns out to be copy righted, then the blog's owner is responsible. How can someone police their blog this closely?

Why apologize? Art is supposed to be expressive. I fully agree about SOPA.

I am really glad that so many people are taking a stand against this.
When the idiots in Congress decide to fuck the world up so badly, action must be taken.

Lovely approach to this ^_^

Yeah, plus with how badly the bill is written, a single link to copywritten material would be enough to get a site blacklisted, which given the interconnected nature of the internet...

So does this mean that we as America will become like China now with the government controlling the internet and controlling what we see, hear, and share with each other to the point that we no longer know what’s going on within our own country. I'm also collecting these to post them all at once so can I use this please?

Your argument is good way to "Sell" conservatives and the political right on the idea that SOPA/PIPA are bad.

Mainly because we WOULD be becoming more like our adversarial nations.

Thanks!

son of a bitch, its everywhere!!! protest everywhere! and all i want is a peaceful time. i gave my bid against sopa. though considering the huge backlash, it becomes more and more likely sopa and pipa will not pass. these are the people who put the politicians shouting at them after all.

Yep, it was everywhere - and it NEEDED to be.

It was the only way to get congress to look past the GOBS of money and lobbyists for the other side.

But it's done for now with SOPA and PIPA being shelved for the time being. :)

I'm not worried. A lot of big name companies (like Google) have stated their disdain for it, and I've seen a decent amount of disent from congress. Also Obama promised to veto it if it ever got to his desk, though judging from what I've heard so far (it can't even get to the committee phase, where all controversial bills go to quietly die) the odds of it passing are extremely small. Good thing too, it's a horrible, poorly thought out, knee jerk of an idea made by people that don't understand the most basic parts of the problem it tries to solve, and that's assuming you think there's even a problem large enough to warrent legislation.

Yep! :D Your predictions have seemed to pan out this time.

But we need to be careful - lest they try to sneak one of these past us again. Most likely they'll wait until they have a more sympathetic President. :(

Nice! Reminds me of the one in the old "Cherry Pop Tart" comics ;)

SOPA is to-day's SOTI in a sense...we must destroy it lest it grow :iconatombombplz:

"You may ask how this applies to you, since SOPA applies only to "pirated" works."

I'll tell you the reason it still applies to you. Because this bill defines "pirated works" so broadly that it could conceivably cover almost any piece of work that exists.

So in the case of visual art, if you drew a picture using another copyrighted image as a reference, your drawing would be considered a "pirated work" even if you credited the person from whom you got the reference image. So long as it's visibly clear that you drew reference from another image, your drawing can be considered "pirated" material. Hell, if your drawing so much as looks somewhat similar to another piece, it can be considered "pirated" material under SOPA's definition.

But surely, you might say, the federal government would protect the First Amendment rights of innocent artists from the greedy entertainment industry. Well, first of all I would say your idea of the moral incorruptibility of Washington, DC is amusingly naive. But second of all I would point out that SOPA essentially gives the entertainment industry the authority to decide what is and is not "pirated" material. So even if Congress wasn't a rotting cesspool of corruption, decadence, and lies it wouldn't matter, because they've handed the authority to police internet piracy over to the very people who have a vested interest in abusing that authority to levels beyond your wildest dreams.

Yep that all certainly applies.

In my rant up top I was attempting (poorly) to illustrate some of the long-term and unintended consequences of such a bill.

But SOPA/PIPA are stopped, FOR NOW. :w00t:
